Leah's Big Brother

A while ago Leah learned that Jesus Christ was her big brother. She ran with this information. Whenever an opportunity arises she explains to people that she has a brother, Jesus, and now she wants a sister. It always surprises adults and makes people laugh...a fun trick she does... although she is very serious about it. I've been waiting for her to ask me where her brother is :) .

Today she did. We discussed her Heavenly Father and where heaven is. I could just see the wheels in her head turning and the disappointment on her face when I told her that her big brother Jesus died for her. It broke my heart because in the anticipation of this moment, I had forgotten that the details regarding her brothers absense would be upsetting to her. She said "ohhh....*thinking* *thinking* *scrunching of face*...one day I'll have another Jesus brother." We went on to talk about how Jesus is alive again but lives with Heavenly Father and Mother in heaven.

These moments are building blocks. I love them. She soaks up information and thinks it over for a while. A couple of weeks from now she will have more questions for me that I will try and answer satisfactorily.

This conversation was fun to have with Leah but it also made me sad to have to tell her that her big brother died. I could tell she was really saddened by this information. One day I'll be able to explain that it is sad that our Savior had to die for us but also how it was important. Children are so concrete in their thinking which makes experiences and concepts so real and tangible. I'm thankful for these talks. Jesus Christ is my big brother and I am sad that he needed to die for me but I'm glad that he chose to do so because he loved me. He is now my Savior and I am happy to think I'll be able to see him again along with our Heavenly Parents.
